Females In The Sport
For some reason, many countries see kick-boxing as more suitable
for women than Western style boxing, though both demand skill,
stamina and courage in equal amounts.
Women who fight must deal with the predictable male chauvinism
("women take gym space and trainers' time away from male
fighters, who are more deserving"). Intriguingly, the superstitions
that women boxers will jinx any ring that they fight in has traditionally
inhibited Thai women from competing professionally in their national
sport but fortunately today professional female Muay Thai is booming
in Thailand
There are some genuine concerns about the safety of female participants
in a dangerous sport. But instead of using these concerns as a
wedge to keep women out of the ring, they should be channeled
into making Muay Thai safer for participants of both genders.
Properly supervised amateur boxing can be a great way to instill
self-confidence and encourage physical fitness and self-discipline
in young women, as male counterparts have known for a long time!
