Thunder &
Lightning VIII
Results of the sell out K.O. promoted 'World Title Event' which took place on Sunday 16th February 2003. The eighth in a series of successful World class gala's this was an occasion that had it all. A fight bill that scored heavily on both quality and quantity, a sell out fifteen hundred capacity crowd in the historic York Hall (scene of many a legendary battle), and a sense of occasion that came with titles and reputations at stake for some of the Worlds top fighters. It took three months to plan and ran like clockwork for five solid hours. At the end even the experience hardened comentators and officials, heaped praise upon the promoter 'Bill Judd' for an occasion that will long be remembered. All said the action came direct from the brave spirits and skills of the fighters. We would like to thank them and also the officials, support staff and volunteers, who gave so generously for the love of the sport. The only question to vex many was how can this be bettered when the time comes for Thunder & Lightning IX?

Nickola Aindow is the new British Title holder, it took only 48 seconds for her to finish off an opponent who seemed demoralised from the bell. Karen Honey failed to do any damage at all and Nikola deserved a much stiffer test. Its hard to imagine a title more easily won, Nickola had done everything asked of her, but must now be hoping that a challenger appears good enough to allow her to show the excellent talent she possesses. |

This promising bout was terminated when the doctor decided that a cut to the back of Rob Storey's head caused by an elbow, was enough to finish the contest. Rob Storey later required three stitches. Stopping the fight was not a popular decision and some felt that Rob Story had been unfairly robbed of his chance. This is taking nothing away from Micheal Dickes who seemed to be ahead, in an excellent bout when the incident happened. |

The challenger Dave Edwards hopes of reclaiming his title were dashed despite a solid performance. The first two rounds settled to a pattern with Paulo DeSilva showing the greater mobility and some excellent knee work in particular against an opponent with a very good, but mainly defensive technique. Round three saw Paulo DeSilva making progress which knees and then an aggressive and on target series of punches that in Dave Edwards recieving a count of eight. Dave Edwards was starting to take serious damage and DeSilva stepped up the pressure in the fourth round, giving Edwards a nose bleed from elbows. The climax followed when a series of punches and kicks ended in a kick to Dave Edwards Chest which floored him. |

The first two rounds of this fight Sak Nayagam used his extra range to target Swatdee with both kicks and punches. Not always on target, they still served to give him an advantage, however Swatdee always looked dangerous, particularly on the counter. Perhaps spurred by a good end for him to the second round, Swatdee went more onto the attack in the third. Trading of punches and kicks was fairly even until Swatdee landed a deadly elbow to the side of Nayagam's face, putting him on the canvas while the ref counted eight. The fight continued fairly even for the next two rounds with both fighters looking poised and controlled. Swatdee landed many telling left foot kicks and Sak Nayagam responding with hurting punches and jabs. It was a difficult decision for the judges. |

Few present doubted that Steve Wakeling is a deserving new world champion. He refused to be awed by an opponent who tried to make up for shortcomings in performance with arrogance and intimidation. Apart from the last round the pattern was that Ying Yai would try to goad Wakeling into premature attacks, countering with elbows or often illegal hip throws. No gesture or gimmick from the now ex-champion Ying Yai, from tossing away his gum shield to kissing his opponent when down, disguised the fact that he came second every round. The final round was all out battle as Ying Yai abandoned his previous tactics for all out, often reckless attacks. The crowd loved to hate Ying Yai, but there was no doubting that he had played his part in giving them one of the most entertaining world class fights ever seen in the UK. |

Thaveesit was knocked cold in the second round by a super hard elbow to the head and unfortunately seriously enough injured to be transported to hospital, where fractures were discovered to the side of his face. Both fighters had fought hard and well, but in the end the power of Kieran "The Boy" Keddle was simply devastating and at the end of the day all that was left to do was to wish Thaveesit a swift recovery. |
